We have known and followed Skate World Better for a long time and now we have decided to connect with this nonprofit and support it in their planned mission in Ethiopia.
The non-profit organization SWB is building skateparks across sub-Saharan Africa, serving not only as a place for fun but also as a space for educational seminars and workshops. Two parks have already been built in Mozambique, one each in Zambia and Swaziland. Next in line will be a skatepark in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is their first destination, where skateboarding has a long history.
Addis Ababa already has two permanent skate parks, run by a locally-based organization called Ethiopia Skate, led by local hero Israel Dejene, who runs a social project in the suburbs called Megabi House. Megabi House is a home for children and youth who literally have nowhere to sleep. Israel is passionate about skateboarding and even teamed up with the likes of Tony Hawk and Nyjah Huston to build him a mini-ramp right on the grounds of Megabi House in 2015. Unfortunately, this mini-ramp has reached the end of its service life and needs to be dismantled, but SWB will build a much larger facility for Megabi House in late 2023.
